The world outside of us entices us to look away from ourselves to find something that makes life meaningful. It is the purpose of this “something” to fill the void that is carried within each one of us.
It reminds me of the story about a very tired Mulla Nasiruddin that attempted to fill a hole in his backyard. He did it by digging another hole and then use the soil to fill up the first hole. When he stood back looking at his backyard, he saw the new hole. O, I still have to fill it. So, he dug a third hole and used the soil to fill the second hole. Standing back he looked at his work and realized there is yet another hole in his backyard. So Nasiruddin started digging again…
By this time, you have the picture. You can understand the human tiredness of attempting fill the hole your soul. It leaves you attempting to fill it with whatever your psychological religion may be. It may be becoming a workaholic, different addictions, stress disorders, the inability to sustain relationships, struggles with meaninglessness and struggles with your own mortality.
The answer is not digging yet another hole, but rather living the true spiritual life. Once you make the connection between what is happening in your life, how you are responding to it, and your spirituality, you will discover the spiritual dimension to your current circumstance.
Spiritual direction will help you make the connection.
